Lady Pirates win a pair

By Chad Dixon

The Lady Pirates of Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) picked up their first wins of the season as they swept the LaGrange Lady Panthers in a double header on Feb. 12 at LaGrange College to improve to 2-1 on the young season. CVCC took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one.  Left fielder Payton Singletary started the inning with a single to left. She then advanced to second on a Camry Blackmon sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Taylor Hamblin was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Kaylynn Church hit a sac fly to right later in the inning to score Singletary from third and Hamblin scored on an errant throw by the LaGrange right fielder.

The Lady Panthers would start the bottom of the third with three straight hits and would tie the game at two with a two-run single by Grayson West. Church would draw a walk in the top of the fifth for CVCC. She advanced to second on a sac bunt by second baseman Sydney Daugherty and took third on a wild pitch. Haley White would drive in Church with a groundout to first as the Lady Pirates re-took the lead. Singletary would cause some separation in the sixth with a two-run homerun to left to extend the lead to 5-2.

Phenix City’s Chauntivia Cliatt doubled to start the top of the seventh and scored on a one-out single by catcher Cam Monday. Margaret Mims picked up her first win of the season in the 6-2 win. She pitched 6 2/3rd innings, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four. Mims pitched consistently at 55 mph and mixed in a change-up in the low 40’s to keep the LaGrange hitters off balanced. Cliatt was 3-for-4 at the top of the CVCC lineup. Madison Whipkey and Monday were 2-for-4, while Daugherty was a perfect 2-for-2.

AnnaLisa Chavez put LaGrange up 2-0 early in the second game when she crushed a pitch that cleared the scoreboard in left field. The Lady Pirates’ offense would stay idle until a four-run sixth inning. Whipkey drew a walk to start the inning. She was lifted for pinch runner Payton Fielding. Monday drew a walk as well in the next at-bat. Singletary would square to bunt and reached on an error by the LaGrange pitcher. Fielding would score on the play to cut the lead to 2-1. Madelynn Formby then laid down a squeeze bunt to score Monday from third to tie the game.

Hamblin would then reach on a fielder’s choice and would score the go-ahead run as Smiths Station’s Allison Moore singled through the left side of the LaGrange infield. The story of the game was Blackmon. She entered the game in the third inning with one on. She would retire 12 Lady Panthers in a row. Her dropball peaked at 58 mph as she allowed only one hit over five innings to notch her first win of the season.

CVCC would complete the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two of the doubleheader. Moore, Daugherty and Formby contributed a RBI each. The Lady Pirates will host Abraham Baldwin on Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. ET as CVCC presents its second annual homecoming.
