Arbor Day is Saturday
By Baxley Oswalt
Saturday is Arbor Day in Phenix City, and as in the past, the Phenix City Tree Commission is hosting a tree giveaway at the picnic pavilion at Moon Lake in Martin-Idle Hour Park. Beginning at 10 a.m. ET and continuing until all tree seedlings have been given away, tree commission members and volunteers will man their posts, offering Rough Dogwood, Dwarf Burford Holly, and Redbud seedlings.
Brenda Starke, former chairman of the commission, who still serves as a volunteer, said a good crowd is expected and individuals wanting the best selection of seedlings need to get to the event early. She also stressed that the seedlings are all free and members of the commission and volunteers will also have advice on planting the seedlings.
Members of the tree commission are Jeff McDonald, Charles Evans, Betty LeBlanc, Fran Loftin, Melanie Oswalt, and Paulette Rhodes. Volunteers are Brenda Starke, Donald Bice and Jennifer Davidson.
